Honoring My Ancestors: The Maroons of Jamaica – A Legacy of Strength & Sovereignty

As we step into Black History Month, I turn my heart toward my ancestors—the Maroons of Jamaica—warriors, healers, and freedom keepers who refused to be bound by the chains of oppression.

The Maroons were not just runaway slaves; they were revolutionaries who carved their own destiny. They escaped the brutal plantations, vanishing into the mountains and dense forests of Jamaica, where they built hidden villages, cultivated their own land, and defended their freedom with unwavering strength.

For generations, they waged guerrilla warfare against the British, using the land as their ally, outsmarting their oppressors, and forging one of the first successful rebellions in the Western Hemisphere. Their victory led to the signing of the 1739 Peace Treaty, which granted them autonomy—a hard-won sovereignty that still echoes through the hills of Jamaica today.

The spirit of the Maroons is in my blood. Their defiance against injustice, their deep spiritual connection to the land, and their ability to rise, time and time again, inspire me every day. Their songs, their rituals, their fierce devotion to freedom—they are not just stories of the past, but living wisdom that fuels my journey.

This Black History Month, I honor their courage, their vision, and their unbreakable will. May we all remember that true freedom is not just given—it is claimed, nurtured, and fiercely protected.
